The biggest problem with "I" is that "I think X" or "I believe X" are not general statements that can be argued. Stated this way, your claim is an opinion, and as such it can't be the basis for an academic argument like the one you're trying to construct in the rhetorical critique. (No one can disagree with teh fact that "you think x" or "you believe x.")
That said, your own experience may help supply some of the evidence to support your general claims. In those cases, the use of "I" would be appropriate. But remember, your own experiences supply only anecdotal evidence. Accordingly, the general points your experience supports should also be supported by other details, examples, or evidence if possible.
